Håkan Ekström, Principle, Wood Resources International,
USA
Mr.
Håkan Ekström is the principal of Wood Resources International
LLC, an internationally recognized consulting firm providing forest market analysis and wood price reporting for the forest industry worldwide.
He has, for the past 22 years, worked in various capacities relating to wood products utilization, international forest products marketing and global wood supply. His international experience is extensive, including visitation of more than 20 countries to research forest resource issues and to study forest products industry developments on-site.
He is also the editor of the Wood Resource Quarterly and the North American Wood Fiber Review, two reports tracking wood markets and focus on the global and the North American market, respectively. The reports include information about wood costs, wood supply and trade of wood products in all the major regions of the world.
Bob Flynn, Director, RISI Inc, USA (also part of Organising Committee)
Robert
Flynn is Director of International Timber for RISI. His work involves analysis
of trends in international timber supply and demand and trade in pulpwood
and sawlogs. Prior to joining RISI in April 2006, he worked 18 years as a
consultant with several firms including Jay Gruenfeld Associates and Wood
Resources International, assisting clients in understanding trends in forest
resources, forest ownership, and industrial development in Southern Hemisphere
plantation forest countries, China, and elsewhere. In addition, Mr. Flynn
worked 11 years as a forester, primarily for Champion International in Oregon.
Projects in 2006 have included multi-client studies on China’s timber supply deficit, the Global Tree Farm and Managed Forest Industry (comparison of growing costs and investment opportunities in planted forests around the world), and the International Pulpwood Resource and Trade Review (also known as “The Woodchip Report”,
14th Edition published February 2007).
Makoto Hasegawa, Mitsui O.S.K. Bulk Shipping (Europe) Ltd., UK
Makoto is General Manager of an European subsidiary of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines
(MOL). He has worked at MOL in several fields after graduating from university
with a bachelor degree of Economics. In 1997 he was posted to Vancouver BC
where he had responsibility as a commercial manager at Gearbulk Shipping Canada
Ltd. In 1999 he returned to the MOL's head office as Manager for wood chip
carriers. He had led the team there which addressed the challenges of globalization
for MOL's wood chip carriers' business. Last year he was transferred to London
where he is looking after transatlantic trade. MOL is one of the world largest
shipping companies which encompasses broad range shipping activities, including
dry bulk, containerships, car carriers, tankers and LNG carriers. MOL makes
a strong showing in the field of woodfibre transportation, handling world biggest
fleet of chip carriers and regular dry bulkers, and also having a stake in
Gearbulk which is a leading carrier of unitized forest products.
Rod Meynink, Principal and a Director of MBAC Consulting Group Pty. Ltd, Australia
MBAC
Consulting Group Pty. Ltd., a forest, forest industry and bioenergy consulting
firm based in Melbourne,
Australia. Rod has 27 years experience in the Australian and international
forestry sector, principally in project management, resource, wood/fibre
supply, valuation, industry, utilisation, carbon, and bioenergy projects. He
has a
BSc (Forestry) 1979 from the Australian National University. Rod has worked
throughout Asia-Pacific as well as North and South America and South Africa.
He has undertaken around 300 projects in 21 countries. His topic at this
conference will be Kyoto and Post- Kyoto Forest Carbon Protocols and Investment
Opportunities.
Dennis Neilson, Director, DANA Ltd, New Zealand (also part of Organising
Committee)
Dennis Neilson is a Director of the New Zealand based forest industry consulting and publishing company, DANA Limited. Dennis has had previous experience as a Wood Supply and Export Marketing Manager for Fletcher Forests; and as a Manager and Director of a JV New Zealand- Japanese woodchip export company. He is presently a Director of a eucalyptus plantation- owning company.
For several years now, Dennis has been a co-author of the annual multi-client
report entitled, “The International Pulpwood Resource and Trade Review”,
- the 2007 edition is its 14th edition. He also has been the co-author of three
editions of a major report on the Global Tree Farm and Managed Forest Industry,
which is designed for international forest investors.
Dennis is one of the three organizers of this, the second International Pulpwood Resource and Trade Conference, after helping to organize, and speaking at the first meeting in Uruguay in 2005. He also speaks regularly at international meetings on forestry investment, wood supply and wood product issues.
Dennis travels regularly to keep up to date with industry and trade trends. In 2006 he visited 28 countries during five trips to research new trends and to assist DANA consulting and publishing clients identify wood resources and trade opportunities. These countries included the important Asian Woodfiber markets of China, Japan and Taiwan, as well as several important Northern, Central and Eastern European fibre importing countries; Australia, South Africa and Turkey.
Juan Prados, Socio Director, Expertos Forestales, Spain
Juan
Prados Edwards is a Forest Engineer by the Madrid Polytechnic Institute, MBA
by ESADE Business School and a Master Degree in Enology and Viticulture.
He has developed most of his professional career at the ENCE Group where he
was Forestry Operations Manager and General Manager for Portugal. He is now
Executive Partner at Expertos Forestales Agrupados being responsible for wood
and biomass trading.
He also is member of the Board of the CEI-Bois (European Confederation of Woodworking
Industries) and Chairman of the European initiative Living With Wood.
Don Roberts, Managing Director, CIBC World Markets Inc
Mr.
Roberts is a Managing Director with CIBC World Markets Inc., an investment
bank with 23 offices around the world and over 2,600 employees. He leads
CIBC’s
Paper & Forest Products Research Team, and is also responsible for the
bio-fuels sector. His primary responsibility is to lead a team of analysts
in advising financial institutions (e.g., pension/mutual funds) on their investments
in the global paper & forest products industry. He is consistently ranked
by institutional investor surveys as one of the top equity research analysts
covering the forest products industry.
He specializes in international commodity markets, and has
collaborated with a number of international forestry organizations to gain
a global perspective on the paper & forest products sector. He has over
30 years of experience related to various aspects of the forest products sector.
Prior to joining the investment business, he was Chief of Industry and Trade
Analysis with the Canadian Forest Service.

Jussi Silventoinen, Head of Forest Industry Consulting, Indufor Oy, Finland
Mr Silventoinen holds a M. Sc. in Forestry (Forest Products Marketing) from
the University of Helsinki and has close to 15 years of experience in the forest
products industry and consulting. He has extensive experience both in North
America and Europe. In recent years, he has also worked on several projects
in Russia, Chile and China. Mr. Silventoinen has supervised and participated
in various types of consulting projects including investment planning and feasibility
studies, due diligence work, market research projects, sawmill and panel plant
acquisition analysis, industry benchmarking, and raw material supply studies.
Prior to his current position at Indufor, he worked as a senior consultant
at The Beck Group (a forest industry consulting firm) in Portland, Oregon.
Tom Wright, Research Director, Hawkins-Wright London, UK
Established
in 1982, Hawkins Wright is an independent market research consultancy to
the forest products industry.
The core business
of Hawkins Wright is the publication of regular multi-client reports on World
Market Pulp Demand Supply, Costs and Prices.
In addition to
the tri-annual “Outlook” forecasting service, Hawkins Wright publishes
a monthly newsletter, “Pulpwatch” which provides statistics and
commentaries on the global pulp market, printing and writing markets, and general
economic conditions.
Due to the accuracy of the price forecast Hawkins Wright has been commissioned
on a private basis to undertake long term market feasibility studies for major
investments, primarily in Latin America and Asia.
The third regular
multi-client report is ‘Defining the China Market
for Pulp, Paper, and Board’ . First published in March 2003,
it is generally recognised as the most comprehensive and detailed analysis
of China’s
industry. More recently, Hawkins Wright has published a comprehensive analysis
of the Asian market for Fine Papers, and ‘Defining the Indian market
for Pulp, Paper, and Board’.
Tom Wright joined Hawkins Wright Ltd in September 1998. Since his first field
trip to the Philippines in 1998 Tom has travelled regularly to Asia and is
the principal author of the Asian multi-client studies. He works on all of
the regular Hawkins Wright publications and private client studies, and is
the principal author of the Asian reports. Tom frequently addresses private
meetings and industry conferences around the world.
Tom holds a BA
Hons degree from Newcastle University in Economics & Spanish
and worked in Financial services for two years in central London before joining
Hawkins Wright. Tom lives in London with his wife and 2 young daughters.
