José Rafael Campino, President, Forestal del Sur S. A., Chile
José Rafael is President of Forestal del Sur S.A., a company involved in the woodchip business from Chile and Uruguay, in the plantation of eucalyptus, trade of pulplogs and sawlogs and the production of wood pellets. He has worked in the forestry industry for more than 30 years.
In 1978 he joined Forestal Arauco until 1986, year in which he started up Forestal del Sur for supplying fibre to the Scandinavian countries and Japan. In 1990 he started up Forestal Los Lagos, a plantation company located in the south of Chile and in the year 2005, together with Mr. Peter Pike in Uruguay, started up Forestal Atlántico Sur, which exports woodchips and pulplogs to European countries and purchases land and plants eucalyptus in Uruguay for an International Fund.
In 2006 he started up, in a partnership, Ecopellets Chile, a company involved in producing wood pellets.
He is also First Vice-President of the Chilean Forestry Association, CORMA (Corporación Chilena de la Madera).
He is a Civil Engineer, graduate of the Universidad Católica de Chile and a Master in Science in Management of Stanford University, U.S.A.
Håkan Ekström, Principle, Wood Resources International, USA
Mr. Håkan Ekström is the principal of Wood Resources International LLC, an internationally recognized consulting firm providing forest market analysis and wood price reporting for the forest industry worldwide.
He has, for the past 22 years, worked in various capacities relating to wood products utilization, international forest products marketing and global wood supply. His international experience is extensive, including visitation of more than 20 countries to research forest resource issues and to study forest products industry developments on-site.
He is also the editor of the Wood Resource Quarterly and the North American Wood Fiber Review, two reports tracking wood markets and focus on the global and the North American market, respectively. The reports include information about wood costs, wood supply and trade of wood products in all the major regions of the world.
Bob Flynn, Director, RISI Inc, USA (also part of Organising Committee)
Robert Flynn is Director of International Timber for RISI. His work involves analysis of trends in international timber supply and demand and trade in pulpwood and sawlogs. Prior to joining RISI in April 2006, he worked 18 years as a consultant with several firms including Jay Gruenfeld Associates and Wood Resources International, assisting clients in understanding trends in forest resources, forest ownership, and industrial development in Southern Hemisphere plantation forest countries, China, and elsewhere. In addition, Mr. Flynn worked 11 years as a forester, primarily for Champion International in Oregon. Projects in 2006 have included multi-client studies on China’s timber supply deficit, the Global Tree Farm and Managed Forest Industry (comparison of growing costs and investment opportunities in planted forests around the world), and the International Pulpwood Resource and Trade Review (also known as “The Woodchip Report”, 14th Edition published February 2007).
Andrew James Fyfe, President, Pöyry Forest Industry Pte. Ltd., Asia-Pacific Consulting
Andrew holds a forestry degree from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and has been active within the forest industry in Asia-Pacific for over 20 years.
Andrew has worked in Australia, Brunei, China/Hong Kong, Finland, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Suriname, Sweden, UK, USA, Vietnam and Western Samoa. His career has included extended periods of around three years spent working and living in both Indonesia and Western Samoa.
He is currently responsible for the Asia-Pacific Management Consulting business of Pöyry Forest Industry. Pöyry is a global consulting and engineering firm focusing on the energy, forest industry and infrastructure & environment sectors. Pöyry employs over 7000 experts and has over Euro 700 million in sales. Pöyry Plc is listed on the OMX Nordic Stock Exchange.
Management Consulting is one of the key practice areas of the Pöyry Forest Industry Group. The Management Consulting segment of this group maintains permanent offices in 12 countries. This includes offices in Vantaa, Stockholm, Moscow, Munich, London, New York, Montreal, Singapore, Shanghai, Auckland, Jakarta and Melbourne.
Andrew reports directly to Helsinki Head Office. His responsibilities include managing all Pöyry Forest Industry’s Management Consulting business activities within the Asia-Pacific region, including strategy development and implementation and sales. This includes management of around 70 consultants and support staff in offices in five countries (Singapore, China, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand).
Andrew is responsible for around euro 15 million in annual sales, key client management and business development initiatives such as expansion into India.
Makoto Hasegawa, Mitsui O.S.K. Bulk Shipping (Europe) Ltd., UK
Makoto is General Manager of an European subsidiary of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL). He has worked at MOL in several fields after graduating from university with a bachelor degree of Economics. In 1997 he was posted to Vancouver BC where he had responsibility as a commercial manager at Gearbulk Shipping Canada Ltd. In 1999 he returned to the MOL's head office as Manager for wood chip carriers. He had led the team there which addressed the challenges of globalization for MOL's wood chip carriers' business. Last year he was transferred to London where he is looking after transatlantic trade. MOL is one of the world largest shipping companies which encompasses broad range shipping activities, including dry bulk, containerships, car carriers, tankers and LNG carriers. MOL makes a strong showing in the field of woodfibre transportation, handling world biggest fleet of chip carriers and regular dry bulkers, and also having a stake in Gearbulk which is a leading carrier of unitized forest products.
Kurt Malzer, Executive Vice President, Business Development, Fulghum
Fibres, Inc,
USA
Kurt Malzer was born in South Africa and has a degree in Chemical Engineering
from the University of Cape Town (1982) as well as a Masters of Business Administration
from Georgia State University (1998). He worked for eight years for Sasol,
a synthetic fuel manufacturing company based in South Africa, before moving,
in 1991 to Swaziland to run the Usutu Pulp mill for Sappi. In 1994 he joined
Fulghum Fibres, Inc - an Augusta, Georgia based fibre-processing company. His
responsibilities include all sales, marketing and business development functions,
as well as the biomass pellet area and management of offshore operations.
Donald R. McClure, Cogent Fibre Europe.
Don is a founding partner in Cogent Fibre and Managing Director of Cogent’s
European operations. Cogent Fibre is the leading exporter of wood chips in
the eastern United States. Don is responsible for securing Cogent's product
contracts, new business development and legal affairs. Prior to forming Cogent,
Don spent five years in a private firm specializing in the marketing of wood
by-products. Don has an extensive financial background having held senior positions
at Arthur Andersen and KPMG prior to starting his career on the derivatives
trading floor of CIBC Wood Gundy. Don brings a unique perspective to Cogent’s
operations by combining his years of experience in both corporate and small
business environments. Don holds a Bachelors degree from Wilfrid Laurier University.
Doug Massey, General Manager, Strategic Development, Forest Enterprises Australia Ltd (FEA)
Doug joined FEA two years ago working out of its Tokyo office in Japan with the joint venture company SmartFibre marketing Woodchips to overseas customers. Previously Doug worked with Daio Paper Corporation for seven years as a specialist strategy and procurement adviser, also based in Tokyo. Doug has a unique skill set combining the need to speak Japanese with a knowledge and understanding of the Japanese culture. These attributes combined with a strong practical working knowledge of wood processing, provides Doug with good marketing credentials to operate in the Pacific basin. Now based in Australia, Doug is responsible for developing strategic joint venture projects with trading houses to grow market opportunities for FEA both nationally and internationally.
Rod Meynink, Principal and a Director of MBAC Consulting Group Pty. Ltd, Australia
MBAC Consulting Group Pty. Ltd., a forest, forest industry and bioenergy consulting firm based in Melbourne, Australia. Rod has 27 years experience in the Australian and international forestry sector, principally in project management, resource, wood/fibre supply, valuation, industry, utilisation, carbon, and bioenergy projects. He has a BSc (Forestry) 1979 from the Australian National University. Rod has worked throughout Asia-Pacific as well as North and South America and South Africa. He has undertaken around 300 projects in 21 countries. His topic at this conference will be Kyoto and Post- Kyoto Forest Carbon Protocols and Investment Opportunities.
Dennis Neilson, Director, DANA Ltd, New Zealand (also part of Organising Committee)
Dennis Neilson is a Director of the New Zealand based forest industry consulting and publishing company, DANA Limited. Dennis has had previous experience as a Wood Supply and Export Marketing Manager for Fletcher Forests; and as a Manager and Director of a JV New Zealand- Japanese woodchip export company. He is presently a Director of a eucalyptus plantation- owning company.
For several years now, Dennis has been a co-author of the annual multi-client report entitled, “The International Pulpwood Resource and Trade Review”, - the 2007 edition is its 14th edition. He also has been the co-author of three editions of a major report on the Global Tree Farm and Managed Forest Industry, which is designed for international forest investors.
Dennis is one of the three organizers of this, the second International Pulpwood Resource and Trade Conference, after helping to organize, and speaking at the first meeting in Uruguay in 2005. He also speaks regularly at international meetings on forestry investment, wood supply and wood product issues.
Dennis travels regularly to keep up to date with industry and trade trends. In 2006 he visited 28 countries during five trips to research new trends and to assist DANA consulting and publishing clients identify wood resources and trade opportunities. These countries included the important Asian Woodfiber markets of China, Japan and Taiwan, as well as several important Northern, Central and Eastern European fibre importing countries; Australia, South Africa and Turkey.
Erik
Olsson Advisor AB
Erik is currently senior advisor regarding, operational efficiency, business
strategy, biomass/fiber supply and renewable techniques to several large
international companies Until recently he lead the LEAN transformation
of SCA (SCA Packaging AB) and also acted as an advisor to the CEO regarding
Energy, Biomass and Fiber supply and development of new business stream
within the renewable energy and chemical field.
Erik initiated, developed, co-founded and started up Green Circle Inc and
owns 7% of the company today. Erik acted as CEO from early 2005 until he started
in SCA in May 2006. Subsequently Erik has been the Vice Chairman of the Board, responsible for
the operational follow up and the development of Green Circle. Erik recruited
all the senior management, prepared all necessary contracts, permits needed
and led the pre projects needed for a successful implementation after handover
to the recruited senior management. Erik thereafter acted as an active coach
to the line management of Green Circle. Erik has prior and during the development
of Green Circle further deepened his extensive knowledge about Southern USA, world
wide biomass/energy markets and biomass conversion techniques. Currently Erik
is involved in several major development activities to develop next generation’s
bio conversion techniques. Erik has also been instrumental in developing the strategy for
Green Circle.
He has also held senior positions with Svaeskog AB, Norske Skog AS, Stora
Cell AB and
Erisoft AB.
Dan Orlando, VP Operations, MagForestry, Canada
graduated in forest engineering
from the University of New Brunswick, Canada in 1981. Over the last 27 years,
Dan has worked in all facets of forest harvesting
and transportation operations and pulp and paper mill operations management
with companies such as Canadian International Paper, Avenor, Newstech Recycling,
Norske Canada and Catalyst Paper in Canada and in the United States. He is
presently Vice President of Operations for Mag Forestry, managing a new Greenfield
500,000 GMT chip export plant and the associated 68,000 hectares eucalyptus
plantation with operations based in Pointe Noire, Republic of Congo.
Scott Paterson,
CEO Port of Portland
Scott took up the role of CEO Port of Portland
in November 2006. A New Zealander, Scott joined the port industry in 2002 as
GM Logistics at Ports of Auckland.
In this role he was responsible for liaising with importers and exporters to
enhance their supply chains via the Port of Auckland. This included establishing
intermodal container hubs (inland ports) on Auckland’s fringe.
Prior to entering the ports industry, Scott was a GM with Fletcher Building
and led the national aggregates company, Winstone Aggregates, for 6 years,
during a period of major quarry expansion.
Scott spent 10 years as a consultant with Ernst & Young working in their
Auckland, London, Moscow and San Francisco Offices.
Scott has a Bachelor of Commerce and a Bachelor of Law from the University
of Auckland.
Scott is married with 3 children.
Juan Prados, Socio Director, Expertos Forestales, Spain
Juan Prados Edwards is a Forest Engineer by the Madrid Polytechnic Institute, MBA by ESADE Business School and a Master Degree in Enology and Viticulture.
He has developed most of his professional career at the ENCE Group where he was Forestry Operations Manager and General Manager for Portugal. He is now Executive Partner at Expertos Forestales Agrupados being responsible for wood and biomass trading.
He also is member of the Board of the CEI-Bois (European Confederation of Woodworking Industries) and Chairman of the European initiative Living With Wood.
Don Roberts, Managing Director, CIBC World Markets Inc
Mr. Roberts is a Managing Director with CIBC World Markets Inc., an investment bank with 23 offices around the world and over 2,600 employees. He leads CIBC’s Paper & Forest Products Research Team, and is also responsible for the bio-fuels sector. His primary responsibility is to lead a team of analysts in advising financial institutions (e.g., pension/mutual funds) on their investments in the global paper & forest products industry. He is consistently ranked by institutional investor surveys as one of the top equity research analysts covering the forest products industry.
He specializes in international commodity markets, and has collaborated with a number of international forestry organizations to gain a global perspective on the paper & forest products sector. He has over 30 years of experience related to various aspects of the forest products sector. Prior to joining the investment business, he was Chief of Industry and Trade Analysis with the Canadian Forest Service.

Jussi Silventoinen, Head of Forest Industry Consulting, Indufor Oy, Finland
Mr Silventoinen holds a M. Sc. in Forestry (Forest Products Marketing) from the University of Helsinki and has close to 15 years of experience in the forest products industry and consulting. He has extensive experience both in North America and Europe. In recent years, he has also worked on several projects in Russia, Chile and China. Mr. Silventoinen has supervised and participated in various types of consulting projects including investment planning and feasibility studies, due diligence work, market research projects, sawmill and panel plant acquisition analysis, industry benchmarking, and raw material supply studies.
Prior to his current position at Indufor, he worked as a senior consultant at The Beck Group (a forest industry consulting firm) in Portland, Oregon.

Alabama USA.
The company, now in its forty-fourth year, has chippers operating in practically
every forestproducing country in the world.
The emphases at this Singapore Conference will be the Precision Model 2300
Four-Flail Debarker, designed primarily for the eucalyptus plantations and
capable of debarking multiple stems at 175 feet per minutes (53m/minutes)
with an average
bark content of three-tenths of 1%.
Smith stated that he believed no other debarker on the market today can achieve
these results.
Joel Strickland, Buchanan Renewables, Liberia.
Joel Strickland is President of Buchanan Renewables a company focused on exporting
rubberwood chips and sawn rubberwood timber from Liberia, West Africa. Buchanan
has been operating since May 2007 and is owned by a foundation in Geneva
Switzerland. Buchanan is ready to export rubberwood chips , and is targeting
a production arte of 500,000 green tonnes in 2009. Buchanans initial operations
are centered around the Port of Buchanan in Liberia.
John Swaine is the Marketing Manager : Woodchips for Mondi, based in Richards Bay South Africa.
Mondi has operations across 35 countries around the world and is fully integrated across the paper and packaging process, from the growing of wood and manufacture of pulp (including recycled materials) and paper to the converting of packaging papers into corrugated packaging and industrial bags. Mondi also has a woodchip processing facility in Richards Bay for the export of woodchips.
John holds graduate and post graduate degrees in Forestry from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. He has been employed with Mondi for the past 18 years in Mondi's South African operations in forest management , pulp and woodchip marketing and sales.
Tom Wright, Research Director, Hawkins-Wright London, UK
Established in 1982, Hawkins Wright is an independent market research consultancy to the forest products industry.
The core business of Hawkins Wright is the publication of regular multi-client reports on World Market Pulp Demand Supply, Costs and Prices. In addition to the tri-annual “Outlook” forecasting service, Hawkins Wright publishes a monthly newsletter, “Pulpwatch” which provides statistics and commentaries on the global pulp market, printing and writing markets, and general economic conditions.
Due to the accuracy of the price forecast Hawkins Wright has been commissioned on a private basis to undertake long term market feasibility studies for major investments, primarily in Latin America and Asia.
The third regular multi-client report is ‘Defining the China Market for Pulp, Paper, and Board’ . First published in March 2003, it is generally recognised as the most comprehensive and detailed analysis of China’s industry. More recently, Hawkins Wright has published a comprehensive analysis of the Asian market for Fine Papers, and ‘Defining the Indian market for Pulp, Paper, and Board’.
Tom Wright joined Hawkins Wright Ltd in September 1998. Since his first field trip to the Philippines in 1998 Tom has travelled regularly to Asia and is the principal author of the Asian multi-client studies. He works on all of the regular Hawkins Wright publications and private client studies, and is the principal author of the Asian reports. Tom frequently addresses private meetings and industry conferences around the world.
Tom holds a BA Hons degree from Newcastle University in Economics & Spanish and worked in Financial services for two years in central London before joining Hawkins Wright. Tom lives in London with his wife and 2 young daughters.
Roger Wright, Hawkins-Wright London, UK
Roger founded Hawkins Wright in 1982 following a career in the paper industry and latterly in management consultancy and market research. He has built Hawkins Wright into one of the world’s leading authorities on the pulp and paper industry and market. He continues to contribute to the Outlook for Market Pulp service which he started twenty-five years ago. He travels widely and is involved in all private consultancy assignments undertaken by the company. Over the past thirty years Roger has lead over 1000 research and consultancy assignments in over 50 countries. He has made contributions to many industry publications and frequently addresses audiences at international conferences. |
