Outlook for the International Pulp Markets
- World demand for market pulp did not grow in 2009; a 3.2 million tonne increase in China's imports was offset by declines in the rest of the world. Demand in 2010 is expected to be slightly lower than in 2009.
- THis year, 2010, 1.6 million t/y of idled BSKP capacity restarts and 2.5 million t/y of new BHKP capacity should become available.
- New BHKP expansion projects whose start-up dates are still uncertain total 17 million t/y

European Market - Woodfiber Supply and Demand Balance
- The next decade will bring an enormous increase in demand for woody biomass in Europe. This is primarily driven by the renewable energy targets and policies of the European Union and the important role of biomass in contributing to much higher levels of renewable energy production.
- Supplying this demand will be challenging! European biomass supply will not meet the new demand levels, even when considering an increased mobilization of European growing wood stock, higher attractiveness of short-rotation forests and the potential use of recovered wood.
At the same time, a fundamental shift of power in the global pulp, paper and panel industry is taking place. The traditional European fibre suppliers are under pressure and the industry is restructuring.
- Pöyry’s latest estimates indicate that the gap between demand and supply for woody biomass can reach beyond 200 million m3 by 2020!
- Signs of a surge in imports are already visible –this provides a unique opportunity for business, particularly for companies that can deliver biomass at competitive costs. A lot is expected from South America.

Southeast Asia
- Woodchips are exported from a number of South East Asian countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam – and maybe Cambodia in 2010-2011.
- Wood types include tropical eucalyptus species/clones and acacia species/clones.
- Generally species type and young age of felling means that pulp- yields are lower than for say E. globulus. However, cheap production costs and short sailing distances to markets can partly compensate.
- Generally difficult/impossible to buy fee simple land – must lease, and often from governments.
- Indonesia has very large areas of dedicated pulpwood plantations. Most of this is committed to world scale pulp mills in Indonesia (one has a capacity of 2.6 million tpy of pulp, and is the largest single site mill complex in the world).
- However, at least four dedicated woodchip export ports have been developed in Indonesia in recent years: one at ~ 200,000 BDMT p.a., two at 550,000 BDMT and one at 700,000 BDMT. At least two more major chip mills are planned.
- The total Indonesian dedicated chip export capacity by 2011 could be more than 2.5 million BDMT, but actual shipments will depend on various resource/internal demand/logistics factors.
- Malaysia has a modest export capability. Much of the previous plantations have been converted to oil palm or sawlog crops. One new chip mill was commissioned in 2005, but has yet to ship any chips.
- Thailand's chip exports grew, then shrank way back but are growing substantially again in 2009-2010. Several new exporters entered the market in 2009.
- Some corporate but mostly farmer plantation expansion in Vietnam has resulted in that country now being a major woodchip exporter. The number of woodchip mills designed to feed the export market has grown from only 15 in 2003 to about 60 in 2009 – most are small but collectively they have become a force in the market.
- Cambodia may be the next woodchip export country in SEA, with at least two companies planning to commence exporting in 2010-2011.
